Brimstone: Building a better future with emission-free cement

Introducing the first carbon-negative process for making cement; Brimstone is the only company making traditional cement without emissions. It is supported by S🌍S Fund, a $200 million investment fund empowering the next generation of innovators, co-founded by Stella McCartney. Using calcium silicate instead of carbon-heavy limestone, Brimstone are transforming the cement industry from a climate problem to a climate solution that actively removes carbon from the air.

Does cement have a significant climate impact?

If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, after the U.S. and China. Cement is one of the most-used materials on the planet, as well as a huge source of global emissions; accounting for 7.5% of CO2 emissions worldwide, cement’s climate impact falls just behind cars. Over 4 billion tons of cement are produced each year, and this number is only expected to increase.

How can we reduce these emissions?

Brimstone’s breakthrough carbon-negative process for making basic Portland cement – a material the construction industry has relied on for over 150 years – now has a climate-positive impact. Producing cement from carbon-free calcium silicate rock, a substance that is also 100 times more abundant than limestone, The Brimstone Process™ eliminates emissions right from the beginning.

Further benefits of The Brimstone Process™

Portland cement and SCM (supplementary cementitious materials) are two core products used in concrete. Today, these are made through different processes and sourced from different locations. Brimstone’s rock has all the minerals necessary to make both cement and SCM from one process in one location, as well as magnesium which removes CO2 from the air.

The result? Truly carbon-negative cement, and a far happier planet.
