The SOS Capsule is a celebration and call-to-action for Earth Day 2024
In celebration of Earth Day 2024, Stella McCartney debuts a limited-edition SOS Capsule crafted from 100% sustainable materials. A concise edit of ready-to-wear, vegan bags and footwear is made from regenerative, recycled and organic fibres. The wardrobe is marked with a stylised S🌍S, graphically communicating both Stella’s love for the planet and stressing the urgency to protect it; a call to action to Save Our Soils, Save Our Seas, Save Our Skies and Save Our Species, but ultimately to save ourselves.
With the sales of this capsule, we will be making a donation to Conservation International.*
Striking S🌍S iconography reinterprets our ‘We Are the Weather' collaboration with author Jonathan Safran Foer. The motif appears on box unisex t-shirts crafted from regenerative cotton sourced from SÖKTAŞ, a farm in Turkey that we have been supporting in transitioning to regenerative practices since 2019.
Regenerative cotton helps to restore biodiversity and soil health, sequestering more carbon from the atmosphere whilst benefitting local communities by not using harmful chemicals and diversifying crop yields. The capsule’s focal point is Stella McCartney’s S-Wave Sport trainer; our most sustainable sneaker to date, constructed from plant-based and second-life materials. This rendition of our S-Wave Sport trainer is crafted from 100% sustainable materials, including an upper and tongue handcrafted entirely from hemp – a plant-based fibre that does not need aggressive pesticides to grow and purifies both air and land, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen whilst cleaning contaminated soil and enriching it with nitrogen. The sneaker’s lining is spun from recycled cotton, its laces and embroidered S🌍S are recycled polyester, and its sole is vulcanised recycled rubber.
Amazon Green jumpers are knit in ethically sourced RWS-certified wool alongside unisex long-sleeved Polar White jersey tops in a blend of organic and recycled cotton. Accessories are trimmed with recycled materials and crafted from a Dune Beige organic cotton – a fibre Stella McCartney has pioneered in the luxury industry since 2008, using up to 70% less water and no harmful chemicals compared to conventional cotton.
Protecting our shared tomorrow through innovation, Stella is also a cofounder of S🌍S Fund – a $200M investment fund empowering the next generation of sustainable innovators. Among the projects it is supporting are: NFW, the innovators of plant-based, plastic-free and fully circular leather alternative MIRUM®; Protein Evolution, the creators of an enzyme process that can infinitely recycle polyester; and Keel Labs, the pioneers of a regenerative seaweed-based yarn with a significantly lower environmental impact than cotton and synthetic fibres.
