BioCir® Flex: Compostable, recyclable, biobased plastic alternative
What is BioCir® Flex?
Innovated by Balena, a next-gen material science company, BioCir® Flex is a non-toxic, compostable, recyclable and biobased alternative to conventional plastics seen in our new S-Wave Sport trainers, debuted as part of the Autumn 2025 collection. It absorbs impact, responds to motion and is as durable as TPU and flexible as rubber, and is dyed with natural cinnamon.
Why are conventional plastics bad for the planet?
Synthetic materials shed microplastics throughout every stage of their lives. If incinerated, they release toxic substances into the air – meaning the ways in which we can destroy, or even recycle, them are extremely limited. Because of this, 35% of microplastic pollution in our oceans comes from synthetic clothing.
How is BioCir® Flex made?
BioCir® Flex is made using simple, readily available feedstock sources like castor beans, oils and polysaccharides, creating a material as flexible as rubber and as durable as TPU – reaching the highest levels of biobased content.
Why is BioCir® Flex biodegradable?
Fusing sustainability and circularity, BioCir® Flex is created through combining high molecular weight biodegradable polymers, naturally occurring bio-based constituents and other biodegradable modifiers. It can either be recycled or composted in an industrial compost facility at the end of its life and biodegraded into renewable biomass, leaving no waste or negative impact on the environment.
We are constantly exploring plant-based, regenerative alternatives that do not harm animals and heal Mother Earth. Harmonious to this philosophy, the innovators behind BioCir® Flex strive to revolutionize material science, developing innovative, accessible, and high-performance circular solutions across multiple industries.
