Spotlight On: The Frayme

Iconicity is rare and difficult to qualify; cherished items imbued with cultural cachet and power, commanding immediate desire. Amongst handbags, certain elements are tangible – elevated design, luxury materials and artisanal craftsmanship. What makes an icon truly stand out is its timelessness: being equally desirable after a day or a decade. This notion was embodied first in the Falabella and, now, the Frayme bag.

Launched as part of our Autumn 2021 collection, the Frayme is a bold style reenergising classic brand codes inspired by our iconic Falabella series. Expressing a love for animal friends, we revisit the Frayme this Valentine’s Day 2023.

The Frayme is named for the oversized aluminium chain strap that frames the bag, complemented by a statement logo medallion in zamac. Handcrafted by luxury leather artisans in Italy we have retrained to use vegan materials, its body is consciously made from Alter Mat – our signature cruelty-free, animal-free alternative.

Its chunky, bicolour galvanic chain blends from classic gold to contemporary silver on the handle. It is laced, by hand, around its half-moon body using organic cotton rope, lending it a strikingly defined shape. The vintage-inspired medallion takes cues from the work of Carl Auböck – one of Stella's favourite artists – and is made from zamac, a combination of zinc aluminium that is crafted in moulds without creating waste materials.

Committed to being both cruelty-free and conscious, each bag is lined with our solventless, vegan alternative to suede.

Our Frayme series continues a Stella legacy of having never used leather, feathers, fur or skins since day one. From mycelium to grape waste, our cruelty-free alternatives to leather are pioneering materials that reduce waste, move the industry away from fossil fuel-based synthetics and are kinder to Mother Earth.

In 2022, we launched our Frayme Mylo™️, the world's first-ever luxury bag crafted from mycelium – the root-like structures of fungi. Originally released as a numbered run of 100, more will be available in February 2023. The Frayme has also been (re)imagined in smooth and grainy Alter Mat, metallic, velvet, crystal-studded and Fur Free Fur iterations, with more to come.
